History
Granville Township was surveyed in 1797 as part of the U.S. Military District, with its distinctive five-mile square layout reflecting the 1796 congressional land act. Early settlers included Welsh immigrants, who arrived in 1802 and left a lasting legacy through road names and cemeteries in the Welsh Hills. By 1805, New Englanders from Granville, Massachusetts, and Granby, Connecticut, established the Village of Granville, carefully designing it to reflect a traditional New England town with a central square and surrounding thoroughfares. Many historic structures from this era, including St. Luke’s Church and the Buxton Inn, still stand today, showcasing Granville’s unique heritage.
The Village of Granville and Granville Township share a deep connection, both in history and in the present. While the Village is incorporated, it remains part of the Township, with residents voting on Township Trustees and local issues. Today, Granville Township is home to over 9,000 residents, with more than 3,600 living within the Village boundaries.
Community
Granville has maintained its distinctive small-town charm and rural character, avoiding the suburban sprawl seen elsewhere in central Ohio. This is largely due to the community’s commitment to preserving green spaces through the passage of open space levies and collaborative efforts to adopt a comprehensive plan that balances growth with preservation. These initiatives reflect Granville’s dedication to fostering a vibrant, close-knit community that values its historic and rural identity.
Education
Granville has a rich history of education, dating back to the early 1830s when it was home to five schools, including the Granville Female Seminary and the Granville Literary and Theological Institution, now known as Denison University. While the Female Seminary closed in the 1890s, Denison University remains a cornerstone of the community. Its historic campus, perched on College Hill, is a key feature of the Granville Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, the Granville Exempted Village School District continues this tradition of excellence, serving 2,500 students across four schools. The district consistently earns top marks, including an "Excellent with Distinction" rating from the Ohio Department of Education. For over a decade, Granville has exceeded every state performance indicator, a distinction achieved by only a handful of districts in Ohio. Granville Middle School has also been honored as a National Blue Ribbon School, reflecting the community's dedication to fostering exceptional education for all students.
Commerce
Granville offers a vibrant and thriving commerce scene that blends local charm with modern convenience. The Village is home to an array of independently owned businesses, including unique shops, boutiques, restaurants, and professional services that cater to residents and visitors alike. Downtown Granville, with its walkable streets and historic character, serves as a hub for retail, dining, and community events. Beyond the Village center, businesses benefit from proximity to the Columbus metropolitan area, providing access to a broader market while preserving the distinctive small-town feel. This harmonious balance of tradition and innovation makes Granville a welcoming place for entrepreneurs and established businesses looking to thrive.
Culture & Arts
Granville is a vibrant hub for culture and the arts, boasting over 25 arts organizations that contribute to the community's dynamic creative spirit. From galleries and performing arts groups to festivals and workshops, Granville offers abundant opportunities to experience and engage with the arts. Denison University further enriches the local art scene with its renowned programs in music, theater, and visual arts, hosting exhibitions, performances, and lectures that are open to the community. This deep appreciation for culture and creativity is woven into the fabric of Granville, making it a haven for artists and art enthusiasts alike.
